چکیده
The earliest anatomic description of abnormalities of the “occipital vertebrae” was attributed to Meckel in 1815 by Gladstone and Erickson-Powell (20). In 1830, Charles Bell first described the clinical and pathological development of “spontaneous atlantoaxial dislocations” resulting from destruction of the transverse ligament “that holds the process of the dentata in its place” (3). After this, there were detailed anatomic and autopsy studies reported in reference to abnormalities of the craniovertebral junction (5, 18, 27, 30, 42). Classic descriptions by Gladstone and EricksonPowell (20) and Giacomini (19) pointed to the clinical implications. The significance became appreciated after the radiographic study on basilar invagination by Chamberlain in 1939 (6). Radiographic descriptions of the craniocervical abnormalities and their implications, together with the craniometric reference lines, aided in the diagnosis of craniocervical abnormalities on plain x-rays as well as with tomography (6, 12, 25, 26, 30, 31, 52).

A Brief Reprt of Polymicrobial Osteomyelitis of Odontoid Process with Epidural Abscess
Background & Importance: Infections of the craniocervical junction are rare. Case Presentation: We present a case of infection by methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus mitis that was not previously reported. Conclusion: Neurosurgeons must suspect for diagnosis and initiate broad antimicrobial therapy, including active agents against gram-negative and then...
متن کاملTuberculosis of the craniocervical junction.
Tuberculosis of the craniocervical junction is rare even where the condition is endemic. It poses problems in both diagnosis and management. We describe 25 cases followed over a period of 12 years, and relate the presentation, diagnosis and management. Of our 25 patients 16 were managed conservatively and nine by surgery. In order to diagnose this condition a high index of suspicion and advance...
متن کاملOccipital condylar fractures: a review.
The purpose of this review article is to summarize the epidemiology, pertinent anatomy, mechanisms of injury, and classification systems of occipital condylar fractures (OCFs), as well as their clinical presentation and screening, the importance of computed tomography (CT) for detection, and current treatment options. The authors emphasize the rate of occurrence of OCFs, which may be detected i...
متن کاملClinicoradiographic presentation of a girl with progressive pseudorheumatoid arthropathy.
We report the case of a girl-child who manifested the clinicoradiographic features of pseudorheumatoid arthritis. 3D-CT scan of the craniocervical junction showed distinctive features of dystopic type of os odontoideum. The report highlights the necessity to explore the craniocervical junction in patients with progressive pseudorheumatoid arthropathy.
متن کاملUnilateral hypoglossal nerve palsy: as the only presentation of tuberculosis.
Tuberculous spondylitis is not an uncommon disease of the spine. Near one percent of all cases of spinal tuberculosis (TB) involves craniocervical junction. Hypoglossal nerve palsy is not an uncommon neurological finding, but isolated involvement of the hypoglossal nerve is rare and limited to case reports or small case series. Here, we report a case of craniocervical junction tuberculosis pres...
